You’ve probably heard of carrier oils like jojoba, castor, and coconut. But one of the greatest pleasures of creating My July has been discovering lesser-known ingredients and the remarkable gifts they offer our skin.

Among our favorites is tamanu oil, a rich, deep-green oil pressed from the nuts of the tamanu tree (Calophyllum inophyllum), which grows throughout tropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Known as “tamanu” in Tahiti, “kamani” in Hawaii, and “dilo” in Fiji, this botanical has a long history of traditional use in skincare. Its distinctive green color, thick consistency, and earthy, nutty aroma have earned it the nickname “green gold.”

What Makes Tamanu Oil So Special?

Beyond its beautiful color and rich texture, tamanu oil has a fascinating chemical composition.

Like many botanical oils, it contains an abundance of fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. Each plays a role in nourishing and protecting the skin.

Oleic acid helps soften and condition, while linoleic acid is an important component of the skin’s natural barrier, helping it retain moisture. Palmitic and stearic acids contribute to tamanu oil’s rich, comforting texture, making it especially lovely in formulas designed for dry skin.

But what makes tamanu particularly interesting is what lies beyond its fatty acids.

The oil contains naturally occurring plant compounds, including calophyllolide, a compound studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Early laboratory research suggests calophyllolide may help regulate certain inflammatory responses involved in the skin’s natural repair process. Other studies of tamanu oil preparations have explored their effects on collagen production and skin cell activity.

While much of this research is still in its early stages, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the science behind an ingredient treasured for generations.

A Little Botanical Comfort

With its naturally rich texture and nourishing fatty acids, tamanu oil is a beautiful addition to skincare rituals centered on comfort and care.

You’ll find tamanu oil in two of our most comforting formulas: Serenity Now Body Butter and Therapy Healing Balm, where it joins a thoughtful blend of botanical ingredients to help soften, moisturize, and care for dry skin.

It’s one of those quiet botanical discoveries that reminds us why we fell in love with formulation in the first place.

Sometimes, nature’s most extraordinary ingredients are the ones we have yet to discover.
