Before we had Micaela, we had Shannon—a red golden retriever we brought home from the middle of Long Island. My husband, Gordon, and I liked to joke that if we could keep a living, breathing dog alive, surely we could handle a tiny human. Four years later, Micaela arrived.
For reasons I’ll never know, Micaela thought Shannon was the funniest creature on earth. One look at him and she’d burst into deep belly laughs that made her little body shake like it was some sort of inside joke to which only she was privy.
When Micaela was finally old enough to care for an animal, we let her choose a dog of her own. From a litter of golden retrievers, she picked the body-surfing puppy of the pack and named her Genevieve.
The unexpected softie in our family turned out to be Gordon. As a child, he’d always longed for a dog—a wish his mother firmly vetoed. Having not one but two golden retrievers felt like reclaiming a piece of the childhood he never had.
And now, more than 20 years later, after creating My July, we’ve found ourselves circling back to our beginnings with the launch of a product for dogs. Woods Dog is an all-natural flea, tick, and mosquito repellent—the dog-friendly counterpart to our bestselling Woods Nature Spray tick and mosquito repellent for humans. While its scent is slightly different due to a special blend of essential oils made specifically for dogs, it carries the same devotion to safe, natural, and effective ingredients.
Dogs are a human’s best friend. Just like our own skincare rituals, they’re woven into our mind, body, and spiritual wellbeing. With our family’s long history with dogs, it felt right to expand Woods Nature Spray into a companion product for your favorite companion—the one who wanders beside you. Something from our world, made for theirs.
